Josephine (Josie) Miller is a queer stage director and theatre-maker based in Brooklyn, NY.
Josie graduated from Brown University in May 2024 following the completion of a Theatre Arts and Performance Studies honors thesis, which explored the intersection of women’s issues and body horror in satirical plays written in the last fifteen years. Their thesis was advised by Patricia Ybarra and Julia Jarcho.
Josie’s directorial interests are in the eerie, outrageous, and horrific, with a pronounced investment in new play development. They are particularly committed to work which uplifts the voices of marginalized genders and uses a “fun house mirror” style of satire to explode the insidious nature of inequality. Josie has assistant and associate directed for MFA directing candidates through Brown/Trinity Rep. They have worked at theaters in New York and Atlanta such as Clubbed Thumb, Actors Express Theatre Company, and Horizon Theatre Company.
Josie studied stage management under Barbara Reo and worked as a stage manager on both Brown University and Brown/Trinity Rep productions.
While at Brown, Josie was awarded the Robinson Potter Dunn Premium, given at the end of the junior year to the student with the highest standing in rhetoric, English composition, and public speaking. They were also been granted an award from the S.R. Steinfield Memorial Fund, which recognizes seniors who have made a significant contribution to the performing arts during their undergraduate years. Further, Josie was selected to deliver the student address at the 2024 Theatre Arts and Performance Studies Department Ceremony within Brown’s Commencement. They among the 3% of Brown’s class of 2024 elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a third-year student. Within the Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies, Josie served as chair of Sock and Buskin, the student/faculty board, and was chosen to direct the department’s senior slot, a position awarded to one concentrator per year.
